School Counseling (50 - 53 credit hours)
The School Counseling Program will prepare
students to become counselors in elementary, middle and/or high schools.
Graduates gain general counseling skills plus specialized knowledge about
school counseling. This program is designed for students who currently
hold a valid Florida Teaching Certificate and would also like to obtain
certification in school counseling. It provides coursework and knowledge
necessary to pass the Florida Guidance and Counseling Certification Exam.
Students who do not currently hold a valid Florida Teaching Certificate
but would like to be a school counselor, may also apply. Upon completion
of the degree requirements, students will have the knowledge necessary
to pass both the Florida Teacher Certification Exam and the Florida Guidance
Counseling Certification Exam. A passing score on all sections of the
CLAST exam
is required for admission.
Mental Health/Community Counseling (60 credit hours)
The Community Counseling Program prepares students seeking training to
become mental health/community counselors. Mental Health counselors emphasize
prevention and work with individuals and groups to promote good mental
health. Mental Health
counselors help individuals with issues such as addiction and substance abuse,
depression and anxiety, stress management, selfesteem problems, aging,
job and career concerns, educational decisions, and family and marital
problems.
This program provides coursework required by Florida statute and the Florida
Agency of Health Care Administration for licensure as a Florida Mental
Health Counselor.
NOTE: Students also have the opportunity
to become certified in both School and Community Counseling to increase
marketability in the field. These students must complete and graduate
from one of the plans listed above then take courses and internships
leading to the other option on a post-graduate basis.
