Overview
The
University of South Florida has created a Leadership Studies program
that provides students a practical and theoretical grasp of leadership
at the undergraduate level. In the past, leadership skills were taught
primarily at the graduate level, with little knowledge gained during
the undergraduate experience. While many managers and supervisors come
from a
variety of fields and hold only a bachelor's degree, USF realized the importance
of teaching students leadership skills as an undergraduate. This prepares students
to be superior leaders in their profession upon graduation. Leaders are needed
in every field, whether you are becoming a teacher or an engineer. This Leadership
Studies program is interdisciplinary in nature, and should be of significant
benefit to students in all areas of study.
The Leadership Studies program has
a unique approach to leadership education. It combines practical theories of
leadership and learning, thereby affording the opportunity for students to study
the nature of authority, leadership, social and role dynamics, political processes
and the values that orient their careers. In these courses, students will learn
personal, diagnostic, operational and tactical skills as well as be challenged
to investigate self, context
and strategy.
Degree Program
The
University of South Florida Lakeland offers two different options in
Leadership
Studies-a minor and a certificate.
MINOR:
The minor in Leadership Studies consists of a minimum of 18 credit hours
with a "B" average (3.0). All students shall complete the core courses
and select three additional courses from the list of approved courses
for the program. The series of courses is designed to help students develop
personal and organizational leadership skills.
CERTIFICATE:
A certificate in Leadership Studies is also available at the USF Lakeland
campus. This certificate may be obtained by completing 9 credit hours.
The required courses include
Leadership Fundamentals (SLS 2261), Survey of Leadership Readings (SLS 3140)
and Community Leadership Practicum (SLS 3948). Those wishing to obtain
this certificate
and are not current USF students may do so by enrolling as non-degree seeking.
