Multicultural Leadership Program

The University of South Florida Lakeland’s Multicultural Leadership Program (MLP) is a leadership development program that focuses on mentoring incoming students. The MLP enhances the awareness and acceptance of diverse cultural groups within the university and the community.

We engage students in a variety of learning opportunities that expand their knowledge and strengthen their abilities in leadership and service. More specifically, the MLP encourages students:

To identify and develop personalized leadership styles

To learn effective leadership skills, including communication, critical thinking, listening, collaboration, motivations and conflict resolution.

To learn to lead in diverse, multicultural settings through hands-on experiences.

To increase awareness of the values and challenges of diverse cultures.

To serve as a role model, a resource, and a mentor to incoming USF Lakeland students.

What is a mentor and what are the requirements?

Mentors in the MLP are, at their core, student leaders who share their time and experience to encourage and help new transfer students to reach their academic goals in preparation for the future. A mentor will fill a number of roles. These include:

Campus life assistant—providing personal assistance to incoming students and encouraging effective acclimation to USFL.

Role model—modeling effective academic and life skills behaviors, and serving as friend and confidant.

Academic skills assistant—assisting in the development of necessary academic and life skills.

Motivator—providing encouragement and support, and motivating students toward academic and life success
