USF Lakeland Campus Offers “Free” Courses in Special Education

LAKELAND, FL (November 26, 2001) - Have you ever thought that college course work was out of your reach? Thanks to a new limited time program at USF Lakeland, college course work is easily available and, if you qualify, totally free. During the spring semester, the College of Education will offer three “free” undergraduate courses in Special Education. Students meeting the following criteria will be eligible for a timely tuition reimbursement via a distance learning grant:
  • Student must be employed in a public school in Florida.
  • Student must earn a "B" or above in the course.
  • Student completes and submits required paperwork.
  • Student must be working toward certification in Special Education.

While students must pay tuition up front, the reimbursement does not depend on critical shortage funding and tuition will be reimbursed to students meeting the above named requirements.

Three courses are offered as part of this special program. One course entitled “Narrative Perspectives on Exceptionality,” is part of the regular undergraduate program of study in Special Education and is also an “exit course” which applies to any undergraduate degree. “Education of the Exceptional Adolescent and Adult,” and “Strategies for EMH” both apply toward V.E. teacher certification in special education. All three courses have minimal amounts of face-to-face classroom meetings with the balance of the course being offered online. Additionally, all three courses are offered in the evenings to accommodate the working student.

For more information on theses Special Education courses, contact Patricia Fagan at (863) 667-7015.

Spring Registration for both degree and non-degree seeking students is open until January, 11, 2002, however, degree seeking students should be registered no later than the first day of classes, January 7, 2002, to avoid penalty fines. Course schedules for USF Lakeland are now available on campus, on our web site at www.lakeland.usf.edu, or students may request by phone a schedule to be mailed directly to them.

While these are three special courses being offered next semester, they aren’t the only classes available on the Lakeland campus. There is one area of study right for you! With a broad range of class times on a local, hometown campus, USF Lakeland has a degree program to suit your needs. Contact the office of the Registrar at (863) 667-7000 to find out how you can be part of the USF-Lakeland campus.
