Saxena Family Funds Lecture
Series at USF Lakeland
LAKELAND,
FL (October 16, 2003) - Thanks
to the generosity of one local family, the University of South Florida's
Lakeland campus will soon have the opportunity to create a Lakeland-based
distinguished lecture series. The Saxena Family Endowed Lecture Series
is made possible by a contribution from Mr. and Mrs. D. "Sax" Saxena
of Lakeland, the founder of the Lakeland-based consulting engineering
firm ASC geosciences, Inc. where his two sons, Anu Saxena and Jay Saxena
are also owners. The Lecture Series will enable the local campus to bring
in esteemed lecturers for community and scholarly use presentations.
Additionally, the series will serve all of the academic programs and
topical interests of the residents of the Lakeland campus' service area.
The need for a lecture series was evident to the family, as was the campus to which the donation would be made. "We've learned more and more about the University of South Florida. It seems to have met with great success, not only in Tampa, but also on a regional basis," states Anu Saxena. "The Lakeland community will embrace the endeavor that USF has begun here, locally and we're the first of several organizations, many families, and individuals, I'm sure, that will help USF Lakeland attract talent, enhance public knowledge and education, increase their awareness and increase the profile here of the Lakeland Campus and the University in this community." The generosity and philanthropy experienced by the family in the local community was the catalyst for the donation. "One thing we hope to convey is that, in this community we've been raised in, philanthropy has been demonstrated to us over and over by others. As our generation grows older and we move on to positions of responsibility, we feel a duty of philanthropy here. The examples you see in this community, all the wonderful things going on, make it very easy to do something to be of service to the community." Another primary goal of the Lecture Series is to motivate students. Saxena comments that "it is our hope that students will benefit and in doing so will be inspired to do great things in their communities as they progress in their academic and professional careers."
Administration on the Lakeland campus has greeted the endowment with great enthusiasm. "The Saxena Family has the wonderful vision to recognize the value to a growing university campus of a permanently funded lecture series which will draw citizens from throughout the area into the life of USF Lakeland," states Campus Vice-President and CEO, Dr. Preston Mercer. "We are grateful for their generous commitment and look forward to outstanding public lectures in the Saxena Family Lecture Series."
Topics for the upcoming lecture series will be announced in the coming months. For more information on the Lecture series or on the Saxena Family Endowment, please contact Executive Director of Development, Dr. Al Sistrunk at (863) 667-7024.
