First Doctoral Graduate
Announced
At USF Lakeland
LAKELAND,
FL (December 2, 2003) - The
University of South Florida's Lakeland campus is proud to announce the
upcoming graduation of its first-ever doctoral graduate. Kate Blackburn
will receive her Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership
from the University of South Florida's Lakeland campus Tuesday,
December 16, 2003, at 7:00 p.m. in the Youkey Theatre of the Lakeland Center.
Blackburn, whose career in education first began in 1973, earned the
position of Principal of Dundee Ridge Middle School in Dundee, FL, in
September 2003. After traveling to the campus in Tampa every weekend
for two years to earn her master's degree, the idea of staying in Lakeland
to earn her Doctorate was very appealing. "I had just completed my master's
and I had received an e-mail that advertised a doctoral program here
in Lakeland. I went to the information session never really thinking
I would enroll, but the information in the session changed my outlook." This
decision proved to be one that would not only make an impact on her life,
but in the lives of others as well.
The pride demonstrated by professors
on the Lakeland campus is evidence of her positive decision. "I can think
of no person who better exemplifies our graduate program in educational
leadership at Lakeland than Dr. Kate Blackburn, who, while being a successful,
practicing school administrator, found the time to complete a demanding
course of study leading to the degree of Doctor of Education in Educational
Leadership. We are all very proud of her and her accomplishments," states
one of her USF Lakeland Educational Leadership professors, Dr. Richard
O'Sullivan. O'Sullivan served as the Program Director at the time of
Blackburn's entrance into the program.
The Doctor of Education degree
in Educational Leadership is available in its entirety at the USF Lakeland
campus. The focus of this degree program is on the improvement of educational
practices. The program is designed to develop competencies of practitioners
as exemplary school leaders.
Now that Blackburn has earned her doctorate
in Educational Leadership from USF Lakeland, she plans to contribute
to educational journals, continue teaching at the master's level and
explore the possibility of teaching at the doctoral level. She will receive
her doctoral hooding during Commencement exercises.
