Engle Re-elected to
Second Term on USF Foundation Board
LAKELAND,
FL (December 10, 2004) -
Local Realtor and esteemed businessman Gene Engle of Lakeland was
recently re-elected to a second term to the University of South
Florida Foundation Board of Trustees. The Foundation serves as the
primary fund raising entity on behalf of USF. It promotes higher
education in general, and specifically encourages the advancement
of teaching, research and public service through private support
for the university's academic and student development endeavors.
Board members are business and community leaders who are vitally
interested in the welfare of higher education in the greater Tampa
Bay region and in Florida. During his previous term on the board,
Engle was most proud of increasing the visibility of the USF Lakeland
Campus and Polk County area with USF constituents and community
members, alike.
Engle, who currently serves on the USF Lakeland Campus Master Planning
Steering Committee and the USF Board of Trustee Community Engagement
Committee, is a lifelong Polk county resident and has been an integral
part of the growth in the county for several years. Since establishing
his own real estate development in 1968, Engle has been actively
involved in the Lakeland community, serving as Chairman on the Chamber
of Commerce, the Lakeland Board of Realtors and on the Sports Marketing
Committee of Polk County board, to name a few. Additionally, he
was recently recognized by the USF Lakeland campus as the Spring
2003 Distinguished Service Award Recipient.
One of the most recent projects Engle has been involved with is
serving on the Board of Directors for the Sun and Fun show/convention.
The largest establishment of its kind in the South, Sun and Fun
consists of air shows and workshops held throughout the year. A
week-long convention held in April draws the largest crowds with
its aircraft demonstrations and displays.
"I am very honored to be asked to serve on the Foundation Board,"
stated Engle regarding the appointment. "I feel very strongly that
the growth of the USF Lakeland campus will help us continue to be
strong in economic growth in our area."
Of Engle's re-appointment, Dr. L. Preston Mercer, CEO and Vice-President
of the Lakeland campus states, "We are very fortunate to have someone
with Gene's knowledge of central Florida, enthusiasm for higher
education and willingness to donate time to assist in USF-Lakeland's
development. We believe that he will be a tremendous asset to the
University and our ability to implement new programs as we partner
with the community to increase educational opportunities for central
Florida."
