USF Lakeland to honor
Hispanic Heritage with celebration
LAKELAND,
FL (September 16, 2005) - To
celebrate diversity found on the campus and in the community, the
University of South Florida Lakeland and its Student Government
Association (SGA) will host the kick-off for a monthlong tribute
to Hispanic heritage beginning Wednesday, September 21.
USF Lakeland SGA formed a partnership with Polk Community College
to co-host the free event that will feature Latin music, salsa dancers,
and authentic Latin cuisine from 11 am to 1 pm on the Lakeland campus.
Faculty, students and community members are invited to view performances
and receive salsa dancing lessons from members of Salsa Caliente,
a Tampa-based dance studio. The staff of Sabor Latina Restaurant
will provide fried cassava, cheese patties and patio balls as well
as other authentic Hispanic cuisine.
Among other events scheduled throughout the coming weeks, USF Lakeland
will participate in the City of Lakeland's Hispanic Festival at
Munn Park on October 8. Campus admission representatives will be
on hand at the festival to assist prospective students and provide
information regarding USF Lakeland's minority scholarships and upcoming
diversity initiatives. For additional information on event schedules,
contact Jennifer O'Steen at 863-667-7835 or Jerry Miller at 863-667-7037.
Beginning September 15, America celebrates the culture and traditions
of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the
Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the
Caribbean. September 15 was selected as the beginning of Hispanic
Heritage month because it is the anniversary of independence of
five Latin American countries - Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala,
Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate
their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.
The observation of Hispanic Heritage month concludes on October
15.
