Healthcare changes
for Polk Residents
LAKELAND,
FL (October 3, 2005) - For
some 4,100 Lakeland residents who are employed by the State of Florida,
changes to the State’s healthcare and benefits options this
fall require something new: researching and value shopping.
Fla. Gov. Jeb Bush recently published a statement to all state employees
encouraging them to take a "fresh look at their healthcare needs
and the medical options the State is offering for 2006." State employees
living in Polk County, for instance, may now choose among 6 different
health plans, compared with the single option available previously.
The University of South Florida Lakeland has responded to this challenge
by providing its employees with a "Benefits Fair" as a convenient
way to make sense of the changes introduced this year by Gov. Bush.
Representatives from BlueCross BlueShield of Florida, AvMed and
United HealthCare participated in the fair, hosted for USF Lakeland
and Polk Community College employees to ease concerns and answer
many health-plan related questions.
"These families must take a look at the new programs and decide
which will provide the best care and protection for their specific
economic situation," said Eve Underhill, USF Lakeland Human resources
director. "I would encourage them to shop for their right fit."
"Finding the right fit can be challenging, especially with healthcare
costs rising all around us. That's why I suggest that other state
agencies think about providing additional resources to employees
during the open-enrollment periods," said Underhill.
Open enrollment for state employees runs Oct. 3 through Oct. 28.
Individuals with questions should check their mail for annual open
enrollment documents or visit the PeopleFirst website at https://peoplefirst.myflorida.com
for additional information.
