USF Lakeland Commencement
honors graduates and
Community leaders
LAKELAND,
FL (December 14, 2005) - The
University of South Florida Lakeland recognizes the achievements
of 87 students at commencement Dec. 16. The ceremony will take place
at 7 p.m. in the Youkey Theatre of the Lakeland Center, 301 W. Lime
Street.
Seventy one students will receive bachelor's degrees, and 16 will
earn master's degrees. Candidates are graduating with degrees in
the areas of Arts & Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering and
Information Technology. USF President Judy Genshaft will confer
the degrees.
The ceremony will feature a keynote address by Senator Paula Dockery
and a presentation of awards to Dr. Sherrie Nickell and graduating
senior, Jerry Miller.
Dockery, R-Lakeland, will give the commencement address. Senator
Dockery began her legislative career in 1996 when she was elected
to the Florida House of Representatives. After serving six years
in the House, she was elected to the Florida Senate in 2002 and
served as a majority whip during her first two years in the Senate.
She currently serves as Chair for the Environmental Preservation
Committee in addition to service on other committees.
Nickell will receive the Fall 2005 Distinguished Service Award at
the ceremony. Nickell is the Associate Superintendent for Learning
for Polk County Public Schools. In this role, she has responsibility
for several departments, including K-12 Reading, Accountability
and Evaluation, Professional Development, Career and Technical Education,
Exceptional Student Education, Federal Programs, and others. Among
her varying community contributions, Dr. Nickell has devoted time
as an advisor to programs at USF Lakeland, and also serves as an
instructor in the University's Educational Leadership program.
Miller will also receive special recognition during the ceremony
as USF Lakeland's Fall 2005 Outstanding Senior. A former United
States Air Force Airman and graduate of Polk Community College,
Jerry Miller is a full-time student, and a full-time employee at
USF Lakeland. He was selected for maintaining a high standard of
academic integrity and his school spirit and service to the University.
Miller is the 2005 Student Government President.
