Goodman Talks Polytech with Rotarians

Dr. Marshall Goodman, VP and CEO of USF Lakeland

VP and CEO of USF Lakeland

LAKELAND, FL (September 20, 2007) -
Dr. Marshall Goodman, VP and CEO of the University of South Florida Lakeland, spoke this morning to members of the Lakeland Christina Rotary Club at Cleveland Heights Golf & Country Club in Lakeland.

Speaking to an overflow crowd, Goodman discussed the concept of a polytechnic university, focused on applied learning, applied research and applied technology. He emphasized the extent to which the strategic development of public higher education opportunities can be linked with economic development, and offered USF Lakeland as an institution that can play a key role in the evolution of the region's economy. Following his speech Goodman fielded questions from the engaged audience. After the meeting, he stayed an additional 20 minutes to visit with interested Rotarians.

Club members noted Goodman's inspirational message and dynamic presentation. At one point, Goodman stepped away from the podium and wandered through the audience, demonstrating the dramatic shift in teaching styles as pedagogy has evolved. "Most universities operate much as they did three hundred years ago," he said, standing within a few inches of two audience members. "But today, with the polytech model, we have abandoned the 'sage on the stage' in favor of the 'guide on the side.' We don't dispense wisdom from the front of a vast lecture hall. Instead, we engage in collaborative discovery and then focus on applying that knowledge to real-world problems."

Goodman was introduced by Isaac Hartmann, financial adviser with Allen & Co. According to Hartmann, a Rotarian, "This was a great opportunity for members of our club to learn more about some very important programs, resources and scholarship at USF Lakeland and to hear from an inspirational leader in our community."

The University of South Florida is one of Florida’s top three research universities, and one of only 10 universities ranked in the top tier of public research universities and the top tier of community-engaged universities. USF Lakeland offers over 20 undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs.

The Lakeland Christina Rotary Club meets Thursdays at 7:00 AM at Cleveland Heights Golf & Country Club, 2900 Buckingham Ave. Lakeland.
