Lakeland ranked No. 22 on hot jobs list
LAKELAND,
FL (September 26, 2007) - Lakeland ranks 22nd on a list of the 100 hottest job markets, according to a Tampa Bay Business Journal analysis of employment trends in the nation's 100 largest labor markets over the past five years.
The 100 markets, taken collectively, contained roughly two-thirds of the nation's 116.9 million private-sector jobs as of June 2007. The list of hottest employment markets has Phoenix No. 1, Salt Lake City No. 2 and Boise, Idaho, No. 3. At No. 22, Lakeland is between Atlanta (20) and Memphis (25). As far as listing percent growth in private-sector jobs from 2002 through 2007, Lakeland ranks seventh in the nation with 20.9 percent growth.
“This is great news for central Florida,” said Dr. Marshall Goodman, VP &CEO of the University of South Florida Lakeland. "It also underscores the significance of USF's plans in the region. In the heart of the high-tech corridor, USF Lakeland’s polytech model focuses on providing hands-on learning and applied knowledge that is so relevant in today’s economy. Our new campus will become a hub of applied research, producing practical knowledge and a cutting-edge workforce to sustain the region’s economic vision.”
Mary Mittag, USF Lakeland’s career resource coordinator, also believes the No. 22 ranking is a huge plus for the region.
“I tell our students that they don’t have to go elsewhere to apply for a job. We have plenty right here. I have pages and pages of jobs and internships from local employers. “
Mittag oversees USF Lakeland’s Career Center, which offers students a wealth of information and assistance.
“We do everything we can to help students find their dream job, their dream career,” she said. “They have so many choices, and we have so many ways to help them get there.”
