USF Rises in Ranks of U.S. Research Universities
TAMPA,
FL (October 5, 2007) - The USF football team is getting all the media coverage this week for rising in the ranks of college football’s elite, but USF is also quickly moving up in the ranks of the nation’s research universities. The National Science Foundation’s survey of federally financed research & development expenditures at universities and colleges for 2006 shows the University of South Florida at number 63, up three places from the previous year and the second highest-ranking university in Florida.
The rise of USF is dramatic—it was ranked 130th in 1992, and when Judy Genshaft became president at USF in 1999, the University was ranked at 107.
“From day one, I saw USF as a top research university,” said Dr. Genshaft. “We’ve made remarkable breakthroughs in medicine, biotechnology, engineering, the environment, and other fields that have a positive impact on the lives of people around the world. The fact that research and development funding continues to increase is a tribute to the talented researchers at USF.”
A new five-year strategic plan unveiled last month is centered around the goal of improving the quality of academics and research to position USF for membership in the elite Association of American Universities (AAU), a group of 62 top research universities, including 60 U.S. institutions and two in Canada.
In fact, the 2006 NSF survey shows that in federal R&D expenditures in science and engineering, USF ranks higher than the University of Buffalo, Stony Brook and Rutgers University, which are AAU members. For the first time, USF is ranked higher than the University of Miami (ranked 66th).
In 2000, USF was named to the top rank of research universities by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. USF is one of only 63 public universities in the highest tier, and it’s the only university in the state of Florida with the double Carnegie designation of Community Engaged.
How Florida universities rank in the 2006 NSF survey of federal R&D expenditures in science and engineering:
• University of Florida – 2006 rank #39 – expenditures $248,322,000.
• University of South Florida – 2006 rank #63 – expenditures $153,737,000.
• University of Miami – 2006 rank #66 – expenditures $150,408,000.
• Florida State University – 2006 rank #89 – expenditures $110,358,000.
• Florida International U – 2006 rank #136 – expenditures $45,894,000.
• U Central Florida – 2006 rank #152 – expenditures $37,974,000.
The University of South Florida is among the nation's top 63 public research universities and one of 76 community engaged universities as designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. It is one of Florida’s top three research universities. USF was awarded more than $310 million in research contracts and grants last year. The University offers 217 degree programs at the undergraduate, graduate, specialty and doctoral levels, including the doctor of medicine. The University has a $1.6 billion annual budget, an annual economic impact of $3.2 billion, and serves 44,038 students on campuses in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota-Manatee and Lakeland. USF is a member of the Big East Athletic Conference.
