Expert to address math education for blind students
Public invited to free event at USF Lakeland
LAKELAND,
FL (October 25, 2007) - Dr. Arthur Karshmer will present “AutOMathic Blocks: a computer-based method for teaching arithmetic to young blind students” at the University of South Florida Lakeland’s Information Technology Colloquium on Nov. 1, 2007. The event, which is free and open to the public, takes place from noon to 1 p.m. in LAC 1280 at USF Lakeland.
“Learning mathematics has always been a daunting task for the visually impaired student,” said Dr. Karsher, a professor in the College of Professional Studies at the University of San Francisco.
”For the most part, it’s a task that has restricted their entry into careers based on the reading and writing of mathematical equations. There have been some notable exceptions, but for the most part education in the domains of math, physics, computer science and engineering have been beyond the grasp of blind students. Now, however, a new system is being developed to help young blind students learn both arithmetic and basic algebra.”
Dr. Karshmer ‘s research interests are in the fields of operating-system architecture interface, metropolitan area networking and computer interfaces for the handicapped. A former chair of USF Lakeland’s Information Technology department, he lectures regularly in the United States, Europe and Asia.
Sponsored by USF Lakeland’s IT department, the IT colloquium series, which began in 2002, features USF Lakeland faculty, community members and visiting professors and aims to expand the scope of traditional computer science education into a broader set of disciplines more in tune with the needs of modern society and business.
