USF Lakeland collaborates with top 10 entrepreneurship program
Entrepreneurship Program Director
Steve Budd
LAKELAND,
FL (October 29, 2007) - The University of South Florida’s football team is not the only relatively new program on campus to earn national recognition. USF’s graduate program in entrepreneurship, which is just five years old, has the ninth best graduate entrepreneurship program in the nation for 2007, according to the Princeton Review and Entrepreneur Magazine.
Steve Budd, an assistant director of USF’s Center for Entrepreneurship in Tampa, now directs the new interdisciplinary undergraduate Entrepreneurship Program at USF Lakeland, which blends academic and economic development with an emphasis on applied learning.
“To be ranked in the 10 by Princeton Review and Entrepreneurship Magazine reinforces the excellence of the Center for Entrepreneurship,” said Budd, an adjunct professor in the College of Business. “Dr. Michael Fountain, the director, has put entrepreneurship at USF on the national radar. His leadership makes it happen. His vision was to create an internationally recognized center of excellence for interdisciplinary entrepreneurship. This ranking confirms we are well on our way.”
The key to that success, says Budd, is collaboration, not only within the university but also within local communities. “That creates a win-win for all stakeholders.”
Budd plans to give USF Lakeland students the opportunity to work closely with the Center for Entrepreneurship in Tampa. He envisions undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and business leaders collaborating to develop all aspects of a project.
“The Entrepreneurship Program supports USF Lakeland’s focus on improving economic development for the region by educating and training entrepreneurially oriented individuals,” said Budd. “Our unique undergraduate program will improve innovation, creativity and productivity for students and local businesses.”
The Entrepreneurship Program offers all USF Lakeland students the opportunity for education and training in successful opportunity recognition and development, technology and marketing assessment, technology commercialization, new venture formation and new venture financing.
“Our Entrepreneurship Program serves as an excellent model for USF Lakeland’s polytechnic vision,” says Dr. Judith Ponticell, associate vice president for academic affairs. “Students benefit from hands-on learning, using applied research to produce practical knowledge. Our graduates in turn will benefit the community by using their knowledge to sustain the region’s economic vision.”
