Dr. Cynthia Patterson
Dr. Cynthia Patterson,
Assistant Professor of English

LAKELAND, FL (March 20, 2008) -
Dr. Cynthia Patterson, assistant professor of English at the University of South Florida Lakeland, has been selected for a Jay and Deborah Last Fellowship in American Visual Culture from the American Antiquarian Society (AAS).

The AAS is a national research library of American history, literature and culture. Founded in 1812 in Worcester, Mass., the library's collections document the life of America's people from the colonial era through the Civil War and Reconstruction. Collections include books, pamphlets, newspapers, periodicals, broadsides, manuscripts, music, graphic arts, and local histories

The Jay and Deborah Last fellowship supports research on American graphic material of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries or for projects using visual arts as primary documents for projects in American history and culture through 1876. Jay and Deborah Last Fellows are selected on the basis of their scholarly qualifications, the scholarly significance of the project and the appropriateness of the proposed study to the Society's collection.

According to Dr. Kim Lersch, interim assistant vice president for academic and student affairs, "This award is a tribute to Dr. Patterson's scholarly achievement and her reputation among her peers, and it adds to the prestige of our faculty as well."

Dr. Patterson's fellowship will provide for a one month residence in the Society's Goddard-Daniel House between June 1, 2008 and May 31, 2009.

AAS has been awarding research fellowships since 1972. AAS fellowships are considered highly prestigious and are included on the USF Tampa College of Arts & Sciences listing of faculty awards and fellowships designed to increase USF's research profile for AAU consideration.

Dr. Patterson joined the USF Lakeland faculty in 2005 after completing her Ph.D. in cultural studies at George Mason University. Her research and teaching interests include 19th Century American literature, American periodicals and professional and technical writing. She is active in the Research Society for American Periodicals, an interdisciplinary organization of scholars interested in American magazines and newspapers. Dr. Patterson is the author of a forthcoming book, "Exclusively from Original Designs: The Philadelphia Pictorials and the Graphic Arts.”
