USF Lakeland scholar promotes information literacy

LAKELAND, FL (April 21, 2008) - Elementary professional school counselors from the Polk County school district held their spring meeting April 10 at the University of South Florida Lakeland. The featured speaker was Dr. Wendy-lou Greenidge, assistant professor of counselor education, USF Lakeland. She spoke on “Using Online Resources and Technology to Improve Elementary School Counseling Programs."

Dr. Wendy-lou Greenidge of USF Lakeland stresses the importance of information literacy.

In her presentation, Greenidge stressed the importance of information literacy -- the ability to recognize when information is needed and to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.

”In this Information Age, to provide the best service to their clients and to promote their own professional development, counselors need to develop information literacy,” said Greenidge. “The Internet houses an abundance of counseling information and resources. However, to effectively and efficiently access this information requires knowledge of search engines, web sites, and databases.”

Greenidge provided useful websites, electronic journals and electronic databases filled with valuable information that counselors can use to improve their programs. They also learned how to effectively evaluate the credibility of information on the Web.

Counselors browsed key websites such as those from the American School Counselor Association and the American Counseling Association, which provide continuous professional development opportunities. The presentation also acquainted attendees with online communities, podcasting, social bookmarking and other forms of electronic collaboration where counselors can share resources, and receive feedback from other professional school counselors. The presentation concluded with a review of online games geared toward improving the mental health of children and families.
