Dr. Nathan Thomas discusses mentoring with young professionals
Dr. Nathan Thomas,
campus diversity officer, USF Lakeland
LAKELAND,
FL (April 24, 2008) - Dr. Nathan Thomas, campus diversity officer at the University of South Florida Lakeland, shared his expertise in mentoring at the annual “EMERGE Meets Submerge” event April 22 at Eaglebrooke in Lakeland.
Mentorship, says Thomas, plays a key role in professional development.
"EMERGE Lakeland is fostering outstanding opportunities that stimulate the culture of young professionals into the fabric of Lakeland's diverse community,” he says. “Through its new mentoring program, P2P, EMERGE leaders will be a conduit to help businesses and organizations recruit and retain young professionals. EMERGE Lakeland is creating an identity, sense of belonging, and leadership among young professionals that is inspiring.”
Sponsored by EMERGE Lakeland, the event allows young professionals to meet and learn from established community leaders. A cross-section of some of Lakeland's most prominent leaders -- affectionately called "Submergers," due to their submersion in the Lakeland community -- shared their experiences and wisdom with young professionals who also aspire to improve the quality of life in Lakeland through philanthropy and volunteerism.
"It isn't just about the young professionals learning from the established leaders," said EMERGE Lakeland Chairwoman Punam Saxena. "We want these leaders to witness the vibrant energy and enthusiasm that the emerging professionals in our organization exude, too."
Emerge Lakeland is a networking organization of professionals ranging in age from 21 to 42. Formed in partnership between the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce and
United Way of Central Florida, it aims to provide social interaction among young professionals, opportunities for philanthropic and volunteer engagement and career enrichment.
