USF Lakeland Professor Earns
Grant
LAKELAND,
FL (January 6, 2004) - USF
Lakeland Professor Rosemarie Lamm has been awarded a $132,974 grant
from the Retirement Research Foundation to research aging, chronic illnesses
and other services needed by Central Florida senior citizens.
The grant
follows a series of grants that have allowed USF Lakeland to become
a leader in aging research and services in Central Florida. In 2001,
Lamm and USF Lakeland Associate Vice President Alice Murray received
a Retirement Research Foundation grant to identify variables associated
with chronic illness and elder needs. With that grant, USF Lakeland
developed the Rath Senior ConNEXTions Center, which provides education
and services to area senior citizens. The center opened Dec. 9 after
the Bartow Community Health Care Foundation donated a building for the
program. USF Lakeland faculty used the initial grant to launch the Caregivers
Initiative, which offers education about caring for the elderly, including
seniors who care for other seniors. The grant also generated support
from The West Central Florida Area Agency on Aging and Polk County Elderly
Services to research chronic illness and elder needs.
The new grant
allows USF Lakeland to continue to offer this level of research and
service to Central Florida.
"This grant will allow elderly individuals
access to community resources and education," said Lamm, a professor
of interdisciplinary social sciences. "This will also set the stage
for USF Lakeland and the West Central Florida Agency on Aging to apply
for grants to continue our research and education with the stakeholders' input
in the service provision."
The Retirement Research Foundation has been
at the forefront of efforts to meet the ever-changing needs of older
Americans for more than 20 years. It has invested more than $115 million
to help build a network of innovative and skilled individuals and institutions
committed to addressing aging and retirement issues. Established by
the late John D. MacArthur and endowed in 1978, the Chicago-based foundation
invests approximately $9 million annually to support efforts that enable
older adults to live at home or in residential settings that facilitate
independent living, improve the quality of care at nursing homes, leverage
the wisdom and experience of older adults and promote community involvement
and increase understanding of the aging process and age-associated diseases.
