USF Lakeland to Host
Search and Rescue Expert; Showcasing Footage from "Ground
Zero"
LAKELAND,
FL (March 23, 2005) - University
of South Florida professor of Computer Science and Engineering,
Dr. Robin R. Murphy is the inaugural speaker for USF Lakeland's
Saxena Family Endowed Lecture Series. In her lecture titled, "Up
from the Rubble: Lessons Learned with Rescue Robots," Dr. Murphy
will discuss the use of robotic technologies for rescue missions
and show footage of these robots at "Ground Zero" following the
terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, as well as field work
from Hurricane Charley and the La Conchita Mudslides.
Murphy is a widely recognized authority on the use of robots in
emergency response and was recently profiled in Time Magazine's
"Innovators" issue for her work with robotics and Artificial Intelligence.
She is the director of USF's Center for Robot Assisted Search and
Rescue (CRASAR) and the University of Minnesota's cooperative research
center on Safety Security Rescue (SSR-RC). Dr. Murphy also leads
the CRASAR rescue robot response team, the only such team in the
world, and is a technical search specialist with Florida Task Force
3. She is a published author and associate editor for the Institute
of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Intelligent Systems.
The Saxena Family Endowed Lecture Series is made possible by contributions
from Mr. and Mrs. D. S. "Sax" Saxena and their children; Mr. and
Mrs. Anu Saxena and Mr. and Mrs. Jay Saxena. The Saxenas own the
Lakeland-based consulting engineering firm ASC geosciences inc.
Their gift establishes the first endowed lecture series at USF Lakeland
and its formation is an important milestone in the continuing development
of USF's mission to enrich the community. The endowment enables
the University to bring esteemed lecturers for community and academic
presentations.
The University of South Florida Lakeland will host the first talk
of the newly established Saxena Family Endowed Lecture Series on
March 29, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. at the Polk Museum of Art, 800 E. Palmetto
Street in Lakeland. There will be a 6:00 p.m. reception prior to
the lecture. The event is free and open to the public.
