EMS Professional to
speak at USF Lakeland
LAKELAND,
FL (February 7, 2006) - Noted
emergency medical services (EMS) professional, Mic Gunderson will
share his passion and expertise with community members, students
and faculty at the University of South Florida Lakeland during a
talk on Wednesday, Feb.15 at noon.
Sponsored by USFL's Information Technology department, the lecture
is free and open to the public.
Gunderson has been involved in EMS for over 25 years as a manager
and field clinician with fire, private and military EMS systems,
research teams, EMS medical direction groups and as a consultant
and publisher. He has also served on the boards of directors for
several national EMS organizations and the editorial boards for
various academic EMS journals.
EMS is responsible for providing pre-hospital care by paramedics,
emergency medical technicians (EMT's), and medical first responders.
The goal of EMS is to provide early treatment to those in need of
urgent medical care, and ultimately rapid transportation to an Emergency
Room facility. Stabilizing a patient early significantly increases
their chances of survival, particularly in the event of a heart
attack, diabetic emergency, or severe physical trauma. During the
colloquium, Gunderson will discuss the role of Information Technology
applications within the EMS industry.
In an effort to give Polk County students, educators, community
members and business leaders exposure to new technologies, the free
monthly IT colloquium showcases some of the technological advancements
that are improving organizations worldwide.
The colloquium, which began in 2002, features USF Lakeland faculty,
community members and visiting professors from other universities
and aims to expand the scope of traditional computer science education
into a broader set of disciplines more in tune with the needs of
modern society and business. It is scheduled for the third Wednesday
of each month at noon on the campus of USF Lakeland. Lunch is provided
for participants.
