Panel to address diversity
issues in Information Technology
Lakeland,
FL (March 28, 2006) - A
panel of speakers at the University of South Florida Lakeland will
address the lack of participation and retention of women and minorities
working in Information Technology (IT) fields. The discussion will
be held Wednesday, March 29 at 12 noon during the University’s
monthly information technology colloquium.
Sponsored by USFL’s Information Technology department, the
lecture is free and open to the public.
Panel members include USF Lakeland Director of Diversity, Dr. E.
Nathan Thomas, III; Associate Professor of Computer Science, Dr.
Farimah Fleschute and J. Brent Ellis, USFL Coordinator of Student
Recruitment. Their panel discussion will provide a platform to discuss
the efforts and challenges the technology industry faces with addressing
the number of underrepresented students and women in technical fields.
In an effort to give Polk County students, educators, community
members and business leaders exposure to new technologies, the free
IT colloquium showcases some of the technological advancements that
are improving organizations worldwide. This month’s discussion
will focus on some of the key issues shared at the 2005 Richard
Tapia Conference, “Celebratition of Diversity in Computing.”
The annual Tapia conference honors the significant contributions
of Richard A. Tapia, a mathematician and professor in the Department
of Computational and Applied Mathematics at Rice University in Houston,
Texas. He is internationally known for his research in computational
and mathematical sciences and is a national leader in education
and outreach programs.
The colloquium, which began in 2002, features USF Lakeland faculty,
community members and visiting professors from other universities
and aims to expand the scope of traditional computer science education
into a broader set of disciplines more in tune with the needs of
modern society and business. It is scheduled for the third Wednesday
of each month at noon on the campus of USF Lakeland.
