USF Lakeland Hosts Future Polk Teachers
LAKELAND,
FL (January 30, 2007) - On Friday, February 2, 2007, the University of South Florida Lakeland will host an orientation for prospective Polk County teachers. The event is sponsored by the Polk County Schools and includes Level III interns from five colleges and universities.
In addition to students from USF Lakeland, the event includes Florida A&M University, Florida Southern College, Southeastern University, and Warner Southern College.
According to event coordinator, Dr. Rita Meadows, the event is designed to expose upper level interns to important issues in public education while also providing them with the tools to succeed. Meadows, a faculty member in USF Lakeland's Childhood Education Department, added "At a time when our public schools are facing chronic teacher shortages, an event like this is absolutely critical. Fortunately, the Polk County system understands the need and works very well with higher education in our community. We are the natural feeder system, producing teachers who are already committed to this area."
Among the topics on the agenda for Friday's program are interviewing skills, instructional strategies, classroom management techniques, professionalism and ethics in public schools, and the application process for prospective Polk County teachers. Participants will be introduced to key leaders of the school system and have opportunities to ask questions of these decision-makers.
The orientation session is scheduled to run from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the PCC/USF Lakeland campus. For more information, contact Meadows at (863) 667-7018.
