USF Lakeland employee receives Outstanding Staff Award
Susan Hurley honored for excellence and performance
LAKELAND,
FL (June 21, 2007) - The University of South Florida Lakeland announced that Susan Hurley has received the 2006 Outstanding Staff Award. It is the highest honor accorded to administration and staff employees. The annual award recognizes excellence and a high level of performance and standards that support the overall values and service standards of the USF system.
Hurley is Coordinator of Academic Programs for the USF Lakeland College of Education. She also serves as a counselor in the university’s Counseling Center, teaches on USF’s Lakeland and Tampa campuses, and is working on a Ph.D. She has been with USF Lakeland for five years.
“It is an honor to receive this award,” says Hurley. “I was very surprised. I enjoy helping where I can, but I did not expect to be rewarded for it. That makes it even more special to receive the award.”
It would be difficult, however, to overlook Hurley’s many activities and accomplishments. In 2006 she served as chair of the Safety Committee, where she wrote USF Lakeland’s Emergency Operations Plan. She also chaired a search committee and served on several others. In addition, she became a trainer for Safe Zone, a program that fosters an atmosphere of support and celebration of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals within the USF community. Active in community affairs, Hurley serves on the board of directors of the Drug Prevention Resource Center in Lakeland and belongs to the Bartow Rotary Club.
“I like serving on committees,” says Hurley. “I think what I do helps support our effort to grow and to build a new campus.
Lorie Miros, Special Assistant to the Vice President, nominated Hurley for the award. She says, “Susan Hurley's warm personality and openness to all she encounters help the faculty, staff and, most important, the students, feel comfortable and well taken care of. There is a real sense of collegiality based on integrity, civility, professional responsibility and collaboration. She is the kind of employee who embodies the values and standards of service that USF aspires to. “
“Susan Hurley is a true professional and a caring individual,” says Alice Murray, Ed.D., Associate Vice President. “She never hesitates to take on added responsibilities, willingly and fully embracing the challenge. The Outstanding Staff Award recognizes individuals who embody the ideals and values of the campus, with exceptional service and personal integrity. Recipients provide selfless benefits to others, with a continual positive outlook. They show initiative and always work with honor. Susan possesses all of these qualities and so much more.”
The 2006 Outstanding Staff Awards were presented on May 23, 2007. In a ceremony hosted by President Judy Genshaft, 36 USF employees from the four campuses were honored. Following the ceremony, attendees attended a reception to congratulate recipients on their accomplishments.
