USF Lakeland helps Polk school administrators strive for excellence
LAKELAND,
FL (August 29, 2007) - The University of South Florida Lakeland was among the presenting sponsors of the fourth annual Quality School Leaders Symposia (QSLS) Professional Development Conference, July 27, 2007, at George Jenkins High School in Lakeland.
A professional development model, QSLS is a joint collaborative among USF Lakeland, Polk County Public Schools and Polk Businesses for WorldClass Education.
Author and national education consultant
Larry Bell encourages the audience to
make a difference in the lives of their students.
Author and national education consultant Larry Bell was the featured speaker. He presented “The Power of an Administrator” and “High Expectations: Closing the Achievement Gap” to an audience of more than 300 Polk County school administrators.
With a lively sense of humor and a dynamic speaking style, Bell motivated school administrators to return to their schools with a passion for excellence and a renewed commitment to ensure all students succeed.
“Somebody needs you!” he repeatedly told the audience. “You can make a tremendous difference in the lives of your students.”
A 25--year veteran in education, Bell was nominated for the Agnes Mayer Outstanding Teacher Award. He is the author of “12 Powerful Words That Increase Test Scores and Help Close the Achievement Gap.”
Also on the agenda were Dr. Paul M. Terry, Associate Professor & Coordinator, USF Lakeland Educational Leadership, and Dr. Marshall Goodman, Vice President/CEO, USF Lakeland.

Dr. Terry discussed how USF Lakeland’s role in the QSLS addresses the need for qualified school administrators.
Elaborating on one of Bell’s quotes -- “On your worst day on the job, you are still some child’s best hope” -- Dr. Terry said, “It is imperative that we educators go to work each day with that particular quote ingrained in our professional responsibility.”
Dr. Marshall Goodman, VP & CEO of USF Lakeland,
shares the polytechnic vision with Polk County school administrators.
Speaking of USF Lakeland’s future, Dr. Goodman said, “The polytechnic
vision is all about the application of knowledge.”
Referencing the fast pace of technological innovation, Dr. Goodman told the audience, “Your students will have information at their fingertips. That leads to less need for lecture and note-taking and more focus on applied knowledge. The approach to knowledge-based learning has to change.”
While national school reform legislation continues to raise performance standards for K-12 students, school populations have become increasingly diverse and complex in their range of educational needs. The onus of striking a balance between standards and needs rests squarely on the shoulders of the K-12 administrator, and requires that each administrator have a highly effective and eclectic set of leadership skills.
An audience of more than 300 Polk County school administrators
enjoyed Larry Bell's presentation.
