USF Lakeland Offers Program
for Caregivers
LAKELAND,
FL (August 19, 2002) - The
University of South Florida, Lakeland campus has received a grant from
Polk County Elderly Services, funded by The West Central Florida Area
Agency on Aging, to provide training and education to caregivers of the
elderly. The program will offer information on key concerns for caregivers,
including:
• Stress
• Taking care of the Caregiver
• Nutrition
• Medication Management
• Legal information and more.
Dr. Rosemarie Lamm, a professor at USF Lakeland and the Program Coordinator
has planned 12 sessions throughout Polk County to be held several times
a month from August through December, 2002. Dr. Lamm states the intention
of this program “is to give helpful tips to the people who are now
spending their life taking care of someone who has become physically or
mentally challenged.”
Dr. Lamm, along with Dr. Alice Murray, Assistant Vice President of Academic
Affairs, conducted a study during the beginning of 2002 looking at issues
and concerns for the aging in Polk, Highlands and Hardee Counties. An
area of concern they uncovered, is coping with the high incidence of illness
and the caregiver’s role. Dr. Lamm states “caregivers save
a great deal of tax dollars by preventing care receivers from becoming
prematurely placed in long term care facilities.” However, in most
cases, caregivers are completely unaware of how personally taxing providing
full time care to a loved one can be. The success of the caregiver is
dependent upon how well they care for themselves. If the caregiver becomes
ill, who will care for the care receiver? To answer this question, Dr.
Lamm put together a program to provide caregivers with important information
about caring for their loved one, and the importance of taking care of
themselves. Dr. Lamm will be presenting this program, along with several
students from the Social Science and Sociology Departments of USF. A workbook
and videos have been developed to support the training.
