USF Lakeland graduate helps address Polk County teacher shortage
To address a teacher shortage, Polk County Schools aims to hire 1,000 new teachers for the 2008-2009 school year. Jennifer Jones aims to be one of them.
Five years ago, Jones worked as a teacher’s aide in a Polk County elementary school. Today, after receiving her bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida Lakeland, she’s ready for a career as an elementary school teacher.

Some people may call her blind, but Becky Skipper has a clear vision for her future.
“As information becomes more important, I want to be where all the action is,” says Skipper, who will graduate from the University of South Florida Lakeland Dec. 17 and study for a master’s degree in library science at USF Tampa.
Skipper has never let blindness stop her from reaching her goals.

12-12-2007 • Senior Scholars seeks instructors for new Lunch & Learn series
The University of South Florida Lakeland Rath Senior ConNEXTions and Education Center introduces a new Lunch and Learn series for the winter term of Senior Scholars.
This program gives adults 50+ the opportunity to continue the lifelong learning process in a friendly classroom environment. Students can register for 90-minute lectures held every Friday at the Rath Center in Bartow, beginning Feb. 1, 2008.

12-10-2007 • USF Lakeland commencement honors graduates and community leader
The University of South Florida Lakeland will recognize the achievements of 84 students at its fall commencement. The ceremony will take place Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Lakeland Center’s Youkey Theatre.
Seventy-three students will receive bachelor's degrees, and 11 will receive master's degrees. Candidates are graduating with degrees in the areas of Arts & Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering and Information Technology. USF President Judy Genshaft will confer the degrees.

12-06-2007 • Dr. Andrew Artis receives Outstanding Faculty Award at USF Lakeland
The University of South Florida Lakeland has announced that Assistant Professor Andrew Artis, Ph.D., has received the Outstanding Faculty Award for Fall 2007, presented by the USF Lakeland Student Government Association (SGA).
The award is the highest campus-level honor for USF Lakeland faculty members.

Emblazoned above the entrance to the Fantasy of Flight conference center, those words greeted participants in the November 30 regional planning summit. And while honoring the past and respecting the present, the group of visionaries placed its focus clearly on the future.
The University of South Florida Lakeland, the Central Florida Development Council and Winter Haven Hospital hosted more than 70 representatives from business, education and government, who met to discuss visions for the future of the region to be anchored by USF’s planned polytechnic campus at the intersection of I-4 and the Polk Parkway.

The University of South Florida Lakeland Engineering Division invites students and community members to a free hands-on seminar on LabVIEW, a graphical programming environment for building virtual measurement and control applications that, among other things, allow remote access and control of machinery.
"LabVIEW Introduction and What's New in 8.5." will take place Dec. 11, 2007, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the USF Lakeland Engineering Lab, Room 2154, Lakeland Technology Building. Michele Yackel, field engineer for National Instruments, will lead the seminar.

Polk County Commissioner Jack Myers will receive the Fall 2007 Distinguished Service Award from the University of South Florida Lakeland at its Dec. 17 commencement.
According to USF Lakeland VP/CEO Marshall Goodman, Myers has shown himself to be "a model of leadership and public service."

11-29-2007 • Tara Crum named Outstanding Senior at USF Lakeland
The University of South Florida Lakeland has named Tara Crum of Winter Haven as the recipient of the Fall 2007 Outstanding Senior Award. 
The award recognizes Crum for exceptional achievements in leadership, scholastic achievement, school spirit, work experience and community spirit. She currently serves as president of the Student Government Association and is actively involved in the Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity. Her academic achievements have earned her a Florida Medallion Bright Futures Scholarship, a USF Transfer Student Achievement Scholarship, and membership in the Golden Key Honor Society. A graduate of Winter Haven High School, she earned an associate of arts degree from Polk Community College.

Rosemarie Lamm, R.N., Ph.D., director of the University of South Florida Lakeland Rath Senior ConNEXTions and Education Center, and an instructor at USF Lakeland, presented a paper at the Dagstuhl Seminar on Assisted Living Nov. 14-17, 2007, in Germany.
Her presentation, “Aging and Technology,” was a keynote address with Dr. Edwin Lamm, who presented “Chronic Illness and Aging.” This presentation was in conjunction with a paper Dr. Rosemarie Lamm co-authored entitled “Ambient Assisted Living.” The co-authors are Drs. Arthur Karshmer, Jurgen Nehmer and Martin Becker. Read more
11-15-2007 • Professor brings global perspective to USF Lakeland
For Dr. John Selsky, "the wanderlust started early." And the University of South Florida Lakeland values that attribute.

Beginning at age 16, when he went on a school-sponsored trip to Europe, the USF Lakeland associate professor of management has visited 34 countries. That love of travel led him to an international teaching career.
“In 1988, after receiving my Ph.D. from Wharton, I was looking for a different kind of academic experience,” he said. “I was living in Seattle and was recruited by the University of Otago in New Zealand. One thing led to another and I went sight unseen.” Read more

Artists and art lovers of all ages are invited to the University of South Florida Lakeland’s Arts on the Green on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, from 3:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. on the lawn between LAC and LTB.

The challenge of maintaining the unique Seminole culture while operating in the mainstream economy is the priority for today's Seminole Tribe of Florida, said Willie Johns.
A member of the Seminole tribe, Johns made a presentation on Native American culture at the University of South Florida Lakeland on Nov. 1, 2007. He discussed the history of the Seminoles in Florida from the 1500s to the present. Johns also displayed tribal artifacts and talked about his efforts to keep the tribe's culture alive.

Twenty-one principals and assistant principals from Polk County public schools attended the Quality School Leaders Symposia (QSLS) Diversity Session Oct. 30, 2007, at the Jim Miles Professional Development Center in Lakeland. The University of South Florida Lakeland was among the presenting sponsors.

Jodie Skitka of the University of South Florida Lakeland has been awarded a scholarship from the Bailey Family Foundation, Skitka, a junior from Wauchula, majors in elementary education.
Located in Tampa, the Bailey Family Foundation helps expand the availability and enhance the quality of post secondary education by providing financial assistance to students.

Mariana Lopez of the University of South Florida Lakeland has been awarded a Sallie Mae Fund First in Family scholarship. A senior from Winter Haven, Lopez is majoring in Applied Science with a concentration of Early Childhood Development.
Developed in partnership with the Hispanic College Fund, the Sallie Mae Fund First in Family scholarship program provides scholarships to undergraduate Hispanic Americans who are the first in their family to attend college.

10-29-2007 • USF Lakeland collaborates with top 10 entrepreneurship program
The University of South Florida’s football team is not the only relatively new program on campus to earn national recognition. USF’s graduate program in entrepreneurship, which is just five years old, has the ninth best graduate entrepreneurship program in the nation for 2007, according to the Princeton Review and Entrepreneur Magazine.
Steve Budd, an assistant director of USF’s Center for Entrepreneurship in Tampa, now directs the new interdisciplinary undergraduate Entrepreneurship Program at USF Lakeland, which blends academic and economic development with an emphasis on applied learning.

The University of South Florida ranks 64th in top institutions in total research-and-development expenditures for science and engineering for the 2005 fiscal year. According to the National Science Foundation, USF spent $259, 218,000. Johns Hopkins University ranked No. 1 with an expenditure of $1,443,792,000.

If the college football season were to end today, the USF Bulls would play the Ohio State Buckeyes for the national championship. At USF Lakeland, two prominent staff members find themselves in a "can't lose" situation.
VP and CEO Marshall Goodman taught at and received his M.A. and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. He also met his wife when both were students at Ohio State. When first asked who he’d root for in a battle of the Bulls and Buckeyes, Goodman claimed he felt strongly both ways.

Rosemarie S. Lamm, Ph.D., director of the University of South Florida Lakeland Rath Senior ConNEXTions and Education Center, presented "University and Community collaboration with Senior Adults" at the 7th Annual International Conference on Service-Learning Research: Sustainability and Scholarship.
Her presentation focused on how the community, including university programs, can best serve senior adults. She highlighted the collaboration between community organizations and the Rath Center, which has coordinated services in the community while identifying the needs of elders and their families.

10-05-2007 • USF Rises in Ranks of U.S. Research Universities
The USF football team is getting all the media coverage this week for rising in the ranks of college football's elite, but USF is also quickly moving up in the ranks of the nation's research universities. The National Science Foundation's survey of federally financed research & development expenditures at universities and colleges for 2006 shows the University of South Florida at number 63, up three places from the previous year and the second highest-ranking university in Florida.
The rise of USF is dramatic-it was ranked 130th in 1992, and when Judy Genshaft became president at USF in 1999, the University was ranked at 107.

The University of South Florida Lakeland's Outstanding Senior Award is open to all graduating seniors. Each semester, the award recognizes one graduating senior who has shown exceptional achievements in leadership, scholastic achievement school spirit, work experience and community spirit.
The outstanding senior is honored as a special guest at commencement and sits onstage with the distinguished platform party. The president of the university and a representative of the USF Alumni Association recognize the outstanding senior during each commencement exercise.

Rosemarie Lamm, R.N., Ph.D., director of the University of South Florida Lakeland Rath Senior ConNEXTions and Education Center, spoke at the third annual Partnerships for a Healthier Polk conference Sept. 27. The topic of her presentation was "How Close Are We to Closing the Gap to Equity?"
"With senior adults, chronic illness is common," said Lamm. "Some resist getting treatment, can't afford medicines and have their diseases for years before getting help."

Halloween starts early at the University of South Florida's College of Visual & Performing Arts, with performances of Richard O' Brien's comic sci-fi musical "The Rocky Horror Show," Oct. 4-7 and Oct. 10-13 at USF Theatre 1 on the Tampa campus.
No tricks, just treats in this production of the once-controversial, campy 1970s stage show that spawned a cult-classic movie: USF President Judy Genshaft will make a special appearance in the role of the
Narrator. The Narrator, onstage throughout the show, pops up to comment on the strange happenings coordinated by mad Transylvanian scientist Frank 'N' Furter at a creepy old castle.

09-27-2007 • Bulls make it three straight wins on USF Lakeland Day
herd of more than 250 Bulls fans from Polk County celebrated USF Lakeland Community Day Sept. 22 at Raymond James Stadium. The Polk partisans witnessed history as the Bulls took the field for their first game ever as a nationally ranked team (No. 23 in the AP Poll and No. 24 in the USA Today Coaches Poll). Led by Lakeland's own Matt Grothe at quarterback, the Bulls trounced the North Carolina Tar Heels 37-10.
After making the drive down I-4 to Tampa, the USF Lakeland contingent began tailgating shortly before 10 a.m. A few pregame raindrops failed to dampen fans' enthusiasm - or their appetites - as they enjoyed food and fellowship up until the noon kickoff. Kids' activities included a football toss, face painting and an impromptu game of touch football.

09-26-2007 • Lakeland ranked No. 22 on hot jobs list
Lakeland ranks 22nd on a list of the 100 hottest job markets, according to a Tampa Bay Business Journal analysis of employment trends in the nation's 100 largest labor markets over the past five years.
The 100 markets, taken collectively, contained roughly two-thirds of the nation's 116.9 million private-sector jobs as of June 2007. The list of hottest employment markets has Phoenix No. 1, Salt Lake City No. 2 and Boise, Idaho, No. 3. At No. 22, Lakeland is between Atlanta (20) and Memphis (25). As far as listing percent growth in private-sector jobs from 2002 through 2007, Lakeland ranks seventh in the nation with 20.9 percent growth.

09-25-2007 • Students learn to teach diverse population
The face of Polk County continues to change. For the first time, Hispanics are Polk's largest minority, according to new U.S. Census Bureau estimates, accounting for 14.5 percent of the county's 561,606 residents. In the past six years the number of Hispanics jumped to 81,646, a 44 percent increase.
As central Florida changes, the University of South Florida Lakeland is committed to preparing future teachers to excel in teaching children from all cultural and linguistic backgrounds. USF graduates more first-year teachers than any other Florida university, and Florida principals have rated USF education graduates the best-prepared teachers in the state. Over the past five years, Hispanic student enrollment at USF Lakeland increased 82.8 percent.

A Fast Track I information session will be held at the University of South Florida Lakeland on Oct. 2, 2007, at 6 p.m. in the LLC Building, Room 2124/25.
Fast-Track I is a new cohort open to K-12 educators interested in obtaining a master's degree in educational leadership (M.Ed.) or to educators with a current master's degree (in any field) who want to add educational leadership to their Professional Educator's Certificate.
Beginning January 2008 and ending May 2009, the accelerated Fast Track program features three courses per semester over four semesters (16 months).

Diversity can give an organization a competitive edge. That was the message presented today to more than 70 representatives from business, education, health and community organizations at a free conference, "How to Leverage your Competitive Edge Around Diversity," presented by the Diversity Partnership at USF Lakeland.
The event, which kicked off Multicultural Week 2007, began with a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Nathan Thomas, Director, USF Lakeland Office of Diversity. Sharing ways that they leverage diversity to strengthen their organizations were Ruth Hall, District Administrator, School District of Hillsborough County; Dr. Jose Hernandez, Director of Diversity, USF Tampa; Suzanne Jackson, Director, Office of Student Diversity and Enrichment , USF College of Medicine; Dr. Cynthia Johnson, Senior Manager, Pinellas County Economic Development; and Nat West, Vice President, Winter Haven Hospital.

09-20-2007 • Goodman Talks Polytech with Rotarians
Dr. Marshall Goodman, VP and CEO of the University of South Florida Lakeland, spoke this morning to members of the Lakeland Christina Rotary Club at Cleveland Heights Golf & Country Club in Lakeland.
Speaking to an overflow crowd, Goodman discussed the concept of a polytechnic university, focused on applied learning, applied research and applied technology. He emphasized the extent to which the strategic development of public higher education opportunities can be linked with economic development, and offered USF Lakeland as an institution that can play a key role in the evolution of the region's economy. Following his speech Goodman fielded questions from the engaged audience. After the meeting, he stayed an additional 20 minutes to visit with interested Rotarians.

Lakeland's own Matt Grothe, QB for the USF Bulls, looms large in Polk County. Starting today, a new billboard featuring an action photo of Grothe and the USF logo promotes USF's Sept. 22 game against North Carolina. The game has been designated "USF Lakeland Community Day" by USF Athletics.
The 14' x 48' sign oversees the NE corner of U.S. 98 and Winter Lake Rd., just north of USF Lakeland. Following Saturday's game, the billboard will call attention to USF's Sept. 28 contest against West Virginia.

"The Hollywood Librarian: A Look at Librarians Through Film" is the first full-length documentary film to focus on the work and lives of librarians. It will have its only central Florida showings at the University of South Florida Lakeland during Banned Books Week, Sept. 29 - Oct. 6, 2007. It will also be shown in over 40 locations in North America during the same period.
"The Hollywood Librarian" is a unique and charming blend of film clips, humor and critical analysis of the popular image of librarians. The documentary gives audiences the chance to peer into the world of librarians: the skills and passion it takes, the challenges of book censorship, and declining library funding. Rated G, it runs 95 minutes.

The University of South Florida Lakeland Division of Education announces the start of Fast Track I, a new cohort leading to the master's degree in educational leadership (M.Ed.). The M.Ed. degree is offered through the Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies.
Beginning January 2008 and ending May 2009, the accelerated Fast Track program features three courses per semester over four semesters (16 months).

In early September, Eric Kimelton will say goodbye to family and friends, leave central Florida, board a plane and fly to London, England. He's looking forward to seeing the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace. But Kimelton isn't visiting London on holiday. He's going to study for a master's degree in international business at the University of Westminster.
For Kimelton, who earned a bachelor's degree in marketing from the University of South Florida Lakeland in 2006, London is the next stop on an academic journey that included Bartow High School and Polk Community College.

The University of South Florida Lakeland Office of Student Life will present an on-campus Volunteer Fair on Sept. 11, 2007, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the LAC courtyard. The event is free and open to the public. Sixteen non-profit agencies will take part and share information about their organizations and volunteer opportunities.
"The Volunteer Fair is about recognizing the needs of the community and encouraging students, faculty and staff to get involved and make a difference through volunteering," said Jan Lloyd, Ph.D., director of student life. "The event is specifically scheduled for Sept. 11 to remind people about the differences we can make in our local communities."

Rosemarie Lamm, R.N., Ph.D., director of the University of South Florida Lakeland Rath Senior ConNEXTions and Education Center, spoke this morning to members of the Lakeland Christina Rotary Club at Cleveland Heights Golf & Country Club in Lakeland.
Dr. Lamm, a member of the Arts & Sciences faculty, discussed programs available at the Rath Center and issues related to aging and elder care. Following her speech she fielded questions about the sociological implications of an aging population and opportunities for community involvement in Rath Center activities.

New USF Lakeland Library uses ‘information commons’ model
The University of South Florida Lakeland took a quantum leap forward this year when it opened a new library based on the information commons model. The new facility will help USF Lakeland prepare for its new campus and better serve the needs of its students and faculty.

As college students soaked up the sunshine or otherwise enjoyed their summer vacations, some of their professors spent time in summer school. At the University of South Florida Lakeland, 11 dedicated faculty members voluntarily spent time in the classroom to learn how technology can enhance the learning process for their students.
Advances in technology continue to change the way faculty teach, research and serve within the academic community. Coping with rapid change, however, can often seem overwhelming. The University of South Florida is welcoming a record number of students, a record number of both graduate and transfer students and its highest achieving freshman class according to enrollment figures released today.
USF's enrollment for fall 2007 approaches a new milestone of 45,000 based on first class day numbers of 44,891 students or an increase of 3.4 percent compared to the first class day in fall 2006.

The Senior Scholars Program gives seniors 50+ the opportunity to continue the lifelong learning process in a friendly classroom environment. Classes are held once a week for a six-week semester. Most young college students wait until after graduation before starting a career. Not Aaron Bates. On Sept. 4, just a week after beginning his final semester at the University of South Florida Lakeland, Bates will join the Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce as vice president of communications. He will graduate from USF Lakeland in December 2007 with a major in marketing and a minor in finance.

08-24-2007 • USF Cited in Princeton Review's "Best 366 Colleges"
The University of South Florida ranks number 17 among the Best 366 Colleges in the nation for diversity according to The Princeton Review’s 2008 Guide. Only about 15 percent of the four-year colleges in America and two Canadian colleges were selected for the book.
According to the Princeton Review’s research, USF warranted inclusion because it offers students an outstanding undergraduate education. The review also notes that USF “ is one of the 146 colleges named a Best Southeastern College” and “one of the best overall bargains—based on cost and financial aid—among the most academically outstanding colleges in the nation.” Read more
08-20-2007 • USF Maintains Consistent Growth in 2008 U.S. News & World Report's "Best College" Rankings
Improved graduation rates and higher achieving students stand out among the University of South Florida’s performance measures in the 2008 U. S. News & World Report’s annual college ranking.
The six-year graduation rate increased in 2007. In addition, an increasing percentage of entering freshmen are coming from the top 10 percent of their high school classes and higher SAT and ACT measures for entering freshmen are holding steady after a five-year rise.
