iPhoneWhen Marshall Goodman’s iPhone rings, he hears the future calling.

“The iPhone is nothing short of a revolution,” says Dr. Goodman, VP and CEO of the University of South Florida Lakeland. “Without question, Apple has made a revolutionary breakthrough and delivered the first truly convergent device.”

In the high-tech field, convergence involves using high-speed networks to bring separate applications together. And in the future Goodman envisions for higher education in central Florida, convergence is the name of the game. He sees the iPhone as not only an electronic device but also a powerful example of the kind of change that awaits USF Lakeland. Read more


08-17-2007 • USF President Genshaft Named Business Woman of the Year by Tampa Bay Business Journal

The Tampa Bay Business Journal has named University of South Florida President Judy Genshaft as its Overall Business Woman of the Year. The honor was announced at a ceremony on Friday, August 17. She also won in the Education category. Read more


08-16-2007 • Caring for the caregiver

Caregivers need care too.

That's the message Dr. Aryn Bush of the University of South Florida Lakeland delivered at a meeting earlier this summer of an Alzheimer's Support Group in Winter Haven. Dr. Bush is a cognitive aging psychologist with USF's School of Aging Studies and the USF Lakeland Rath Senior ConNEXTions and Education Center. Read more


08-15-2007 • Kevin Calkins accepted into Leadership Lakeland

Kevin CalkinsKevin Calkins, director of Institutional Research, Effectiveness & Planning at the University of South Florida Lakeland has been accepted into Leadership Lakeland's 2007-08 class.

08-03-2007 • USF photographer offers flashes of hope

Joseph GamblePhotography can help children and their families cope with a life-threatening illness. That's the message University of South Florida photographer Joseph Gamble delivered this afternoon at a meeting of the Rotary Club of Lakeland South.

Gamble is the campus photographer for USF in Tampa. He also volunteers his time as director of the Tampa Bay chapter of Flashes of Hope, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating uplifting portraits of children fighting cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Read more

A professional development model, QSLS is a joint collaborative among USF Lakeland, Polk County Public Schools and Polk Businesses for WorldClass Education. Read more


07-26-2007 • USF Lakeland scholar stays the course

Assistant Professor Cynthia Patterson, Ph.D.When USF Lakeland English professor Cynthia Patterson, Ph.D., traveled to the State Library of Pennsylvania this summer to conduct research, she thought she had the luxury of time. But time was running out when she arrived in Harrisburg, Pa., just before the July 4 holiday.

While Florida officials dealt with their own budget woes, a state budget crisis to the north threatened to lock Patterson out of the library. A partisan deadlock had held up a state government spending plan for the new fiscal year. Unless lawmakers could resolve the impasse, state government – including the state library -- would shut down on Monday, July 9. Read more


07-23-2007 • Sending a message: Lakeland campus sets records, leads USF system

The University of South Florida Lakeland announced today that its recently completed Faculty & Staff Campaign led the USF system and broke three records along the way.

According to USFL's Office of University Advancement, the Lakeland campus had the highest participation rate for any campus in the USF system and set an all-time system record for highest campus participation rate, with over 94 percent of USFL faculty and staff making donations to the campaign. The campaign also set Lakeland records for participation rate and dollars raised, with almost $37,000 in gifts pledged. Read more

07-16-2007 • Reach for the STARS

Starting today, a new summer camp will help 20 local middle-school students have fun while increasing their math, writing and technology skills and learning about local technology careers. The first STARS Math & Technology Summer Camp takes place July 16-20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m at Sleepy Hill Middle School in Lakeland. Read more


07-13-2007 • Kim Lersch promoted to Professor at USF Lakeland

Professor Kim Lersch, Ph.D.The University of South Florida Lakeland announced that Kim Lersch, Ph.D., associate professor of criminology, has been promoted to professor. With this achievement, Dr. Lersch becomes the first faculty member to earn promotion to professor at USF Lakeland. (Other faculty members came to the Lakeland campus having already achieved the rank of professor.)

"Dr. Lersch has made significant contributions in teaching, scholarship and service, not only to USF Lakeland but also to the USF system," said Judith Ponticell, Ph.D., associate vice president, Academic Affairs. "She demonstrates our commitment to academic excellence and applied research and learning. Her promotion to professor is an important step in the growth of USF Lakeland." Read more


07-11-2007 • Local USF students establish award
Professor Mathur claims first honor

The University of South Florida Lakeland has announced that Assistant Professor Smita Mathur, Ph.D., has received the inaugural Outstanding Faculty Award for Spring 2007, presented by the USFL Student Government Association.

The SGA initiated the award and plans to honor an outstanding faculty member each semester. The award is the highest campus-level honor for USFL faculty members, according to USFL's chief academic officer, Judith Ponticell, Ph.D. Read more


07-09-2007 • USF Lakeland helps faculty use technology in the classroom

At the University of South Florida Lakeland, teachers have also become students. New technology has brought exponential change in the way USF Lakeland faculty teach, research and serve within the academic community. Adapting to change, however, can often seem to overload faculty and the organization. To mitigate that tendency, Naomi Boyer, PhD, has successfully implemented a program to help USF Lakeland faculty embrace technological innovation in teaching and the learning process. Read more


07-05-2007 • USF Lakeland offers new course in crime mapping and analysis

Beginning this fall, the University of South Florida Lakeland will offer the first crime mapping and analysis class in the USF system. Professor Kim Lersch, Ph.D., who will teach the course, says it developed in response to the needs of students.

"The advent of desktop computers and easy-to-use geographic information systems has allowed crime mapping and analysis to flourish within law enforcement agencies," says Dr. Lersch. "Mapping technology has been around since the 1980s, but only recently has it become more affordable and more user-friendly." Read more


07-02-2007 • USF Lakeland expands IT program

After several years of producing successful information technology professionals in central Florida, the University of South Florida Lakeland has expanded its information technology program to Tampa.

This fall, the IT department will offer three courses in Tampa: Introduction to Databases for IT, IT Programming Concepts, and Object-Oriented Programming for IT. Read more


06-28-2007 • USF scholar stays home

David FlemingWhen David Fleming graduated from George Jenkins High School in Lakeland, he decided to stay home and go far. Today, after earning BA and MBA degrees from the University of South Florida Lakeland, he is a Ph.D. candidate at USF Tampa.

The USF Lakeland "Stay home. Go far" tagline wasn't introduced until after his graduation, but Fleming lists family and strong ties to the area as reasons he stayed in Lakeland. "Starting at PCC for two years and then continuing at USF Lakeland seemed like a natural fit," he says. Read more


06-25-2007 • University, students and local businesses work together to foster entrepreneurial skills

"For an entrepreneur, good ideas are a dime a dozen," says Steve Budd. "The challenge is how to turn a good idea into a successful business."

As director of the new University of South Florida Lakeland Entrepreneurship Program, and adjunct professor in the College of Business, Budd is developing an interdisciplinary undergraduate program that he calls "a blend of academic and economic development with an emphasis on applied learning." The University of South Florida Lakeland announced that Susan Hurley has received the 2006 Outstanding Staff Award. It is the highest honor accorded to administration and staff employees. The annual award recognizes excellence and a high level of performance and standards that support the overall values and service standards of the USF system. Read more


06-11-2007 • USF Lakeland receives Outstanding Collaboration Award

This week the University of South Florida Lakeland announced that its Office of Student Life has received the Outstanding Collaboration Award from the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) for developing an innovative program to serve the USFL/PCC campus. Read more


06-06-2007 • USF Lakeland offers new bachelor's degrees entirely online

The University of South Florida Lakeland will offer two online concentrations for Florida associate of science (AS) graduates looking for a hassle-free way to earn a bachelor's degree. Read more
