Overview
The
Childhood Education Department
The Childhood Department in the College
of Education is a multi-dimensional academic department whose mission
encompasses research, teaching and service. Faculty in the department
work with state and national educators through research and teaching
to develop and improve the
education of children. The department's integrated mission of research, teaching
and service is evidenced in our programs which include Accelerated Literacy Learning
(ALL), The Brain Research Conference, the Early Childhood Conference, The Early
Research Center for Child Development, Professional Development Schools, and
Suncoast Young Authors Celebration.
The USF Lakeland MA Reading Cohort Program
This master's degree is delivered via a cohort program which starts in
the fall and concludes two years later. The program is designed to prepare
reading specialists, teachers and supervisors and, in the regular format,
leads to a Florida certificate in Reading, grades K-12. An optional program,
the Plan III program, is intended for those who want the masters degree
but are not seeking state certification, such as community college reading
teachers. Students typically take two courses each semester and one course
in the final summer semester. Those students who enter the program without
the two or three prerequisite undergraduate courses (RED 4310 and RED
4511) will
follow a slightly different schedule.
Cohort member responsibilities include:
- Students are expected to complete two courses every semester.
Each course is usually offered one night per week. Some courses
may be delivered on an alternative calendar, such as Saturdays or
a compressed summer schedule.
Students are also expected to:
- Adhere to the official program sequence. In
the event that a member gets off-track, he/she may have to take a course on another
campus.
- Apply to the Graduate School.
- Maintain good academic standing (3.0
or higher).
- Apply to take the comprehensive examination by appropriate deadline,
usually the first
week of the semester prior to the final semester.
- Submit application for graduation
at the beginning of the final semester.
- Subscribe to and monitor Reading Listserve.
